October and November 2014

O.k., so, 3/4 of the way through those Hawaii posts, I realized something went wrong and the pictures were labeled with incorrect dates.  I had to use Dave's notes from the trip to piece the last few days together.  But, in the meantime, I also realized that with the stress of Owen's broken arm/surgery followed by the holidays and then our trip, I haven't posted hardly any pictures since last summer.  How awful a mom am I!!  Anyway, so, I've been going through all of the pictures dating back to October of 2014 and prepping them to post while I waited to get Dave's log book...I wanted the Hawaii posts all together!

Shawn bought Liv this super cute Super Woman dress, isn't it too adorable!!

It was a rough day with an unpleasant kid and no matter what I did, I couldn't get the lighting right.  Notice she still has scars from where she scratched on the mosquito bites she got during the summer!!  I'd forgotten how long that went on!!  Her teacher at the preschool thought she had some sort of disease that I was lying about because the sores lasted so long.  That was, until she got a bite at school and started digging on it too!!

This is what Super Woman looks like when her mom just won't stop taking pictures and she's had all she can take...poor baby...;O)

Then there was the playground incident...Owen was playing soccer outside during gym class on the first day everything froze up.  I'm still mad at his gym teacher for such an irresponsible decision!!!  Anyway, Owen was running hard for the ball, slipped on an icy patch, and fell forward putting his arms out in front to catch himself.  In doing so, the lower bones (radius and ulna) got jammed up into his humerus with such force, they broke off one of the epicondyles (technical term for one of the two bumps on the bottom of your humerus in your elbow) and mashed it into pieces.  I didn't think it was really as bad as it was and called our regular physician.  The incident happened around 10:30, but, our doc couldn't see him until 2.  So, Dave went and got Owen and brought him and I had him lay under my desk at work until his appointment.  Dr.  Baskous had some X-rays done and immediately called and got him into a bone fracture specialist.  But, by the time they could see him, it was after 5.  I feel SO bad for not taking him to the emergency room right away.  I don't know how this kid handles pain like he does!!  After more X-rays, the specialist told us it was one of the worst breaks you could have and that the only way it could be worse was if he had fallen with more force like off a bike or trampoline in which case the bone could have spiraled or something along those lines.  The specialist felt like, in Owen's case, the bone would heal back on it's own and put him in a soft cast and sent him home with some narcotics for pain.  We kept him home for a few days, but, the pain meds made him so drowsy and crazy.  He would wake up at all hours of the night screaming and yelling because he was so itchy.  He was even mean and nasty which is so not like Owen.  So, I tried minimizing the pain meds they'd sent him home on and using naturopathic remedies and tylenol/advil instead which helped a lot.  After a few days, we even sent him to school while in the soft cast!!  Unfortunately, he fell out of his desk at one point and landed right on his arm again.  We went back for a follow-up a week and a half later.  This time, the first doctor was on vacation and another stepped in and looked at the new X-rays.  He determined that they had no option but to do emergency surgery the next morning to pin the bones in place!!  It was after 5pm again because the office was running so behind, so, at that point, we didn't really have an option to ask for a second opinion.

I think I should probably get used to seeing Owen in this position, but, it's absolutely the worst experience ever in my life to have my beautiful little boy in a surgery room.  It makes me appreciate how blessed I am to have healthy kids when you see them in a hospital bed like this.  Makes me realize how painful it must be to be the parent of a child with an actual illness...not just a lack of coordination.  Owen handled it all really well, but, got nervous about the time I took the photo.  He had a great anesthesiologist that came in and visited with him several times.  When he realized Owen was getting anxious, he gave him something to help calm him down.  Owen got really funny and kept telling us how much he loved us.

I took this picture of Liv just before we got the surgery news.  She was clearly unaffected by the stress of it all!

Unfortunately, Owen doesn't handle the narcotics they give for pain very well either that or the anesthesia.  We haven't quite figured it out.  But, he wakes up from surgeries mean and screaming.  It's hard to tell if he's in that much pain or if its the reaction to the drugs.  So, the nurses wanted to wait until he was more clear to give him additional pain meds.  Poor baby was really miserable and a little combative.  We apologized profusely to the nurses and they assured us he was nothing.  They told us that earlier that week they'd dealt with twins getting tonsillectomies that threatened to kill the nurses and kicked the surgeon right in front of their parents and that was BEFORE the surgery!!  By the time Owen was coherent and the pain was manageable, Owen was the last of 10 or so surgery patients to leave the out-patient center.  I think the nurses were kind of pushing us out the door at that point actually!!

Check out the pins!  Crazy huh!!  The portion that sticks out the arm in the bottom of the photo were simply bent flat against his arm and capped with the green silicone caps you see in the next photo.  He complained that something hurt right there every time he sat his arm down, but, we didn't really believe him until they took the cast off!

He had a rough few days recovering, but, did really well and ended up getting his cast off 5 and a half weeks later, which happened to be the week of Thanksgiving.

The surgeon that put the pins in was also the one that removed them.  He literally grabbed a holed of them and twisted back in forth as he pulled them out...no pain meds!!!  CRAZY!!  Owen was tough though and didn't shed a tear although he was definitely in pain.  I wasn't sure he'd be able to let them take the second one out after he served the first!

We had breakfast at Snow City Cafe afterwards to celebrate Owen's freedom and Liv showed off her and her dad's matching shirts...

This may have been later that same day, Liv was showing off her shirt with her super hero mask...

This is a selfie Olivia took while playing on my phone...gotta love that pigtail!!

Some goofy kids at breakfast, gotta love Olivia with her camouflage rifle.

This was just too funny...I came around the corner and saw this!!  Liv sings while she's in the bathroom, reminds me of the bathroom scene with the little girl in Monsters Inc..  It's the cutest thing ever!!

I bought a RIDICUlOUS amount of costumes for Liv this year!  We just kept finding more that were too cute to pass up.  Thankfully, I think they will fit her still for this upcoming Halloween.  So, hopefully, I can keep myself from buying any more!!  Owen on the other hand is big enough, his costumes aren't cheap.  This was Star Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy.  The dude didn't wear this outfit for much of the movie, or at least I don't really remember it, but, whatever makes him happy!

This was just before we headed to the school carnival.

I picked Liv up from school one day and she just looked so cute, I couldn't help but snap a couple pictures!!

Rocking out on mom's iPod...

These are some additional pictures I took testing my Christmas photo background.  The lighting wasn't right, but, these are just such cute pictures, I had to share.

Again, lighting issues that I couldn't correct, but, priceless pics anyway with my Grandmother at her 93rd Thanksgiving!!

We try to buy what we are going to buy for Christmas gifts in October, so, by the time the sales are out on Black Friday, we can shop for ourselves...unfortunately, this year, we seemed to just shop for Dave.  He got a new gun and the paperwork took FOREVER.  So, the kids and I found a place to sit that was out of the way of the crazy shoppers...

The kids were just as goofy as they come and decided to pretend to be sleeping...

We stopped at Red Robin for lunch, but, by then, Liv was SO pooped, she just couldn't stay awake even to eat...she's NEVER done this before or since!  This happened to be the same day we visited Santa which I've shared in an earlier post.  I did pretty good posting the rest of the November and December pictures.  So, I'll skip ahead to 2015 with my next posts.  Sorry these are so out of order!!
